Byrd Rhymes with Absurd

A Jonesville, South Carolina church has put letters on the church sign reading: “Obama Osama Humm Are They Brothers”

Here’s the report from WYFF in Greenville, quoting the church’s pastor, Roger Byrd:
“It’s simply to cause people to realize and to see what possibly could happen if we were to get someone in there that does not believe in Jesus Christ,” he said.
When asked if he believes that Barack Obama is Muslim, Byrd said, “I don’t know. See it asks a question: Are they brothers? In other words, is he Muslim ? I don’t know. He says he’s not. I hope he’s not. But I don’t know. And it’s just something to try to stir people’s minds. It was never intended to hurt feelings or to offend anybody.”
Obama has said repeatedly during his campaign that he is a Christian and attends Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. Despite some criticism, Byrd says that the message will stay on the sign. He took the issue before his congregation Sunday night, and they decided unanimously to keep it.
This is what passes for a man of God around here. He’s just asking the question, that’s all. I have a question or two myself. Like: Where’s the IRS Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division?

Don’t forget that this guy has made the Drudge Report today with that sign..
Is that a double-wide? I say we drive down there and steal his church.
“I don’t know. He says he’s not. I hope he’s not. But I don’t know. ” Excellent point. Now, I’m gonna’ go out on a limb here and say perhaps (just perhaps) if you ask Byrd if he is a Muslim he would say “No,” but frankly I don’t know? The difference may also be that I don’t care whether or not Byrd is a Muslim. However, in light of his witty sign, I think it is safe to say this is a church that sticks to talking about religious instruction on faith and is clearly not wading off into the waters of political action.
Sarcasm aside, I can only imagine this guys whole intent was to make the Drudge Report or the like and is a “hey look at me” “give me some noteriety” type like the American Teen Idol types he probably so deplores. Was this sign on the front of the church of “if it feels good do it?”
[...] I saw this post over at Not Very Bright, I trhought for a minute that nvb had been fooled by the Church Sign Generator. But no … [...]
Add this to the Arial smear last week. Maggots like Byrd, Arial, and the NC Republicans who ran that ad are an important part of McCain’s strategy. He wants the smears done, but doesn’t want to have to do them, so Byrd, Arial, et al. are more than happy to carry his water.
Churches pander to candidates all the time, but ignorant this is on a whole different level. The scariest/saddest part is that the congregation voted unanimously to keep the sign!
